Kolkata Metro History
Kolkata Metro holds the distinction of being India's first metro system, with its original North-South corridor opening in phases starting in 1984 — making it nearly two decades older than any other metro system on this site. It has historically been operated directly by Indian Railways rather than a dedicated state metro corporation, though newer lines involve Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation (KMRC).
